Choosing Your Keywords

When researching a topic related to Latina/o, Hispanic, Latinx History, you will need to try combining or eliminating different keywords in order for the database to retrieve relevant results.

The term Latinx, Latina, Latino, Hispanic, Chicano, or Mexican American can be used along with a different keyword to narrow your results.

 For example:

Latinx AND education

Latinx AND students

Latinx OR Hispanic AND sports

If the concept you're researching has more than one word, enclose the phrase in quotation marks. This will ensure that the database searches for that exact phrase instead of each word separately. For example:

Latinx or Hispanic AND Women AND "equal pay"

Latina or Hipanic AND Women AND "gender roles"

You can also use this strategy to narrow your search down to a specific subset of women, such as:

"Afro-Latina" AND racism

Getting too many results?

Try adding more keywords to narrow your search. For example:

Latina AND workplace AND rights AND "United States"

Not getting enough results?

You can also broaden your search by grouping similar words together using 'OR' - This will help you find resources that talk about the same topic using different words that mean the same thing. For example:
