Poetry Takes Center Stage at Library Launch
Six renowned poets kicked off National Poetry Month at the Library with a captivating reading. Their styles ranged from witty to poignant, showcasing the beauty and depth of contemporary American verse.
Poet Laureate Robert Hass introduced the esteemed group, including former Laureates Rita Dove, Anthony Hecht, and Mark Strand. Ms. Dove's "Lost Brilliance" explored Persephone's underworld journey, while Carolyn Forché's "The Garden Shukkei-en" offered a moving reflection on Hiroshima.
Anthony Hecht delivered a playful piece titled "The Message," while Linda Pastan's "Prosody 101" contrasted rigid poetic structures with the power of lived experience. Mark Strand presented a series of evocative "Dog Poems," followed by "Some Last Words." Charles Wright rounded out the evening with selections like "View from Laguna Beach."
The Library and the Academy of American Poets co-hosted the event, celebrating not only the poets but also the vital role of local booksellers. This reading marked the start of a nationwide celebration of poetry, a tradition dating back to the 1940s at the Library [the actual location was at the Northwest Pavilion of the Jefferson Building's Great Hall].

Poetry is meant to be experience!
Poetry ignites the senses through sound and performance. Hearing a poem read aloud brings the rhythm, rhyme, and imagery to life. The poet's voice adds another layer of interpretation, allowing you to connect with the emotions and message on a deeper level. Check out the Quick Links above for your experience.
