Annotations vs. Abstracts

Abstracts

Image highlighting where an abstract is located in a journal

Is an Abstract the same as an Annotation?

NO.

An Abstract is written by the author(s) of the article and serves as a preview/summary of the article.

An Annotation is written by a student, researcher or scholar and it describes, analyzes and evaluates the article.

MLA Sample Annotations

MLA Citation

Kirkpatric, Ellen. "Transformers: "Identity" Comprised." Cinema Journal, vol. 55, no. 1, pp. 124-133. Academic Search Premier, doi:10.1353/cj.2015.0066.

The article discusses gender identity through superheroes. The author uses popular superheroes such as Wonder Woman, The Hulk and Spider Man. These characters are presented in comics as normal human beings but when conflict arises they transform into a super human form. The transformation results in the characters becoming an exaggerated version of a male or female figure. The author argues that once the transformation is completed the general public alienates these superheroes in the same manner transgender individuals are alienated when sex or gender transition occurs. The article is a useful source because it addresses transgender transitions in American society. Kirkpatric has published gender identify peer-reviewed articles in notable journals.

Movie Reviews

  • Bad Reviews
