How to Search!?!?

There are a few things you can do to help you search effectively:

  • Key Words
    • In the search box, only place one or two keywords. Don't use an entire sentence or type a question.
      • Our databases don't search like Google, so the better keyword you decide on, the better your search results will be!
      • Example Research Question: How are science and technology treated in the novel Frankenstein?
        • Example keywords: Frankenstein, science, technology, medicine, scientific advancement, the 1800s, or Mary Shelley.
  • Limiting your Results
    • In all of our databases, there are options to help you limit your results.
    • By having fewer results, you will be better able to find useful information
    • Keep an eye out for these options:
      • Date Range - Setting a date range will help you find the most up-to-date information on your subject.
      • Type of Material- Sometimes an instructor will ask for a specific type of source. You can limit what you look at to items such as eBooks, Academic Journals, magazine articles, and newspaper articles.
      • Peer-Reviewed Journals- You might need to find a peer-reviewed article, which is a journal article that has been checked for facts, and accuracy, and to ensure the information within the article is correct. These articles are the most trustworthy information you can use in your research.
