Library: Exploring E-Books

Find E-Books on our Library Databases page

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is a library of over 60,000 free eBooks. WOW! From their website: "You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired." They have different formats like epub and Kindle eBooks. Download or read them online! Most releases are in English, but they have books in other languages too, including French, German, Finnish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and more!
Some fun quick links:

Click here to Search and Browse  (Allows you to search from 50 different languages.)
Top 100 EBooks of yesterday  (Lots of modern classics here. ENGLISH CLASS, HELLO!)
Random Search  (Gives your a wide range of topics.  And surprises!)

OpenLibrary.org

I LOVE OPEN LIBRARY (openlibrary.org) ! It has a clean, beautiful search screen. Want to see? Give it a shot using BROWSE BY SUBJECT SEARCH.  Can you believe they have all these great subjects??  The system will be honest, if they don't have the book available you'll see, 'Not In Library.'  The books are free because their copyrights have expired, so most of them are older (but not all).  Login when you want to read one.

TIP: If you have trouble logging in, get the Open Library app on your phone.  It's fast!

Easy Navigation: from Subject Search you can choose a broad category like Fiction, then choose topics like Literature and Humor.  It's just like your fave game show!  Or get serious with Business and Finance. From here, you can select a narrower category like Business Economics,  SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE to find even more categories and authors!  When you find a book you want, click to open the viewer. OpenLibrary.org is a database under the umbrella of Archive.org which I talk about in the next box down!

Archive.org

When you open Internet Archive you'll see this intro: "Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more."  Scroll down for a peek at all the collections and media!  Under the Wayback Machine logo is a search box where you type a keyword, or click Advanced Search. Its search is not as 'pretty' as Open Library, but it offers a lot more formats for books, and all kinds of media.

I typed 'Women's Suffrage Movement' and it prompted me to select: text contents, TV news captions, radio transcripts, archived web sites, etc.  All kinds of choices!!  In addition, you can narrow down to these categories: collections, texts, movies, audio, web, and images.

This library is vast and powerful!!  If you prefer searching for books, go to the black bar at the very top, and click the book image (texts icon). It will bring up 'Books to Borrow' and 'Open Library'. You'll see a bar that says 'Search this Collection.' A good way to search is to select 'text contents,' and type in two keywords; such as Mark Twain and Race. Click on the book you want to borrow. When the viewer opens, click to borrow for 14 days, or purchase.
